Why Investing in your Creative Business ≠ Success
If there’s one thing I know about creative entrepreneurs, it’s that we have PASSION. There’s something about identifying as a creative that I’m sure you’ve noticed… it’s a part of who you are and it eeks out of you…like when you’re a guest at a wedding and you notice every little detail…good and bad. 😅
In our passion to create and to serve, however, we tend to ignore the more annoying parts of our business…you know the ones. 😉 Those projects stay on your to-do list for months at a time and every time you schedule them you find a reason to push them back…ahemFINANCES amiright??
But there is one area that I’ve noticed our passion takes over like a wildfire: “investing in our business” aka: spending every dollar as fast as we make it in the name of “excellent client experience” and “growth.” 😅
As we enter our credit card info, we sigh and justify, “well, you have to spend money to make money” with the hope that this will be the time – this will be the thing that will make us save us.
And yet 2 months down the road there’s another tool, another course, more investing, more untouched purchases and no dollars saved in our bank account.
In our passion to grow and to serve our clients well we invest in courses, tools, and the latest trends, believing that every expense is a step toward success. But what if I told you that this behavior, as well-intentioned as it is, might be the thing holding you back?
I totally get it. This was me! As a natural spender, my emotions and deep desire to grow used to dictate my every purchase. It was easy to think that spending more meant better results, especially when I saw all the “successful” people joining all the programs and buying all the things. Clicking “buy” gave a dopamine hit that made me feel like a wise business owner – I was essentially addicted to buying the momentary hope of a better future. 🫣
I learned the hard way that spending, er, I mean “investing” 😉doesn’t always equal success. I’m guessing you’ve experienced this too.
BUT spoiler alert…simply cutting all your spending is not the answer either.
As a business coach who helps women take back control of their money, I’ve seen it all, but most creatives tend to fall into two categories: the overspender or the oversaver.
The overspenders often come to me afraid I’m going to tell them they can’t spend any money thinking it’s going to be too limiting.
The oversavers often think they have it under control because they’ve got a chunk of savings, yet they can’t seem to stop saving because it never seems like “enough.”
They are both lacking clarity around their money, it just plays out differently.
What they both need to understand is that it’s not about how much you spend or save (although we do need healthy guardrails); it’s about what you spend your money on.
How would it feel if your expenses were aligned with your very personalized growth goals and every dollar you made worked toward your beautifully unique definition of success?
It’s not fun to imagine, but when you don’t know your numbers, you don’t know when enough is enough. This leads to overbooking, unhappy clients, a lack of presence in your personal life and emotional and physical exhaustion.
Both the overspender and oversaver are on a path er, honestly a hamster wheel that just leads to burnout, financial stress and ultimately a business and life you simply can’t sustain.
Because this isn’t just about numbers; it’s about impact. Not just the impact you were meant to have on this world (which I’m super passionate about btw), but we’re also talking about the impact your business should have on your life. You and I both know it’s never just been about the money. You care so stinking much about the impact of your work and the people you work with, but it’s time to come to terms with the fact that your impact is limited if your business isn’t paying you or turning a profit.
You simply can’t continue working as hard as you are without a steady paycheck and clarity in your finances.
Picture this: your spending is curated around your unique definition of success. You have a clear finance strategy that guarantees profit and cash when you need it and you have the structure and tools in place that make sense to your creative brain.
When you’ve got the right goal and the strategy and structure to support it, you’ll finally experience the joy of financial freedom with a long-term strategy you can actually keep up with!
This, my friend, is not a dream; it’s what Profit First did for me and it’s what Creative Income Cure (more on this in a sec!) can do for you.
Whether you’re naturally a saver or a spender, every entrepreneur needs to have control of their money and this is exactly how you can start. It’s not about spending less…it’s about spending intentionally so you can give yourself a raise, pay your bills and make a profit every single time!
Here’s the thing, friend. I’m a true creative and numbers are just not my thing. But Profit First changed everything for me and that’s why I got Profit First Certified and built Creative Income Cure: the self-paced online course for creative entrepreneurs that simplifies numbers and builds on the Profit First method to give you a raise and regular bonuses without working 24/7.
